Options for Straighter Teeth
Many patients come to see Dr. Michael Huang because they desire a straighter smile. Some of these patients have wished for a straight smile all of their lives, while others may have worn braces as teenagers, but have noticed their teeth have moved back out of alignment in adulthood. Most likely, they failed to wear their retainers as directed after their orthodontic treatment.
The truth is, whether you wore braces as a teen or not, your teeth will continuously move at least a slight bit. Because of this, many adults find themselves needing help to maintain a beautiful, straight smile. Dr. Huang has several procedures at his disposal to help straighten your crooked teeth into a glowing grin.

Your Initial Consultation
When you visit our office for your initial consultation, Dr. Huang will sit down with you and discuss what you like and dislike about your smile. He will review your medical and dental history, and perform a thorough examination of your mouth, paying special attention to any misaligned teeth. Depending on what he finds during his examination, the doctor will recommend a treatment that will best work for your mouth.
The doctor will typically recommend one of three methods for straightening your smile. Dental bonding works best for patients with mild misalignment and small gaps between teeth. Porcelain veneers can correct mild to moderate alignment issues as well. Both of these options work well for patients who desire immediate results. For those who prefer a more permanent solution, as well as those with more severe alignment issues, the doctor will recommend adult orthodontics with Invisalign® or ClearCorrect®.
Dr. Huang performs the dental bonding procedure for patients whose smiles appear misaligned due to small or misshapen teeth, or small gaps between their teeth. The doctor uses a composite resin to add length or shape to the teeth and fill in gaps between them. He can tint the resin to match your natural tooth color, and can complete the entire procedure in just one visit.
Dr. Huang will prepare your tooth by etching it and applying a liquid conditioner to help the resin adhere to the tooth. When he has prepared the tooth, the doctor will apply the resin and begin molding it to the correct size and shape. He will smooth the tooth and use a curing light to harden the resin while he continues to trim and shape it. When the bonding has finished hardening, Dr. Huang will check for proper occlusion and make any adjustments he deems necessary, then polish the tooth until it matches the sheen of your natural teeth.
Porcelain veneers can provide a relatively quick straightening option for patients who experience mild to moderate misalignment. Veneers improve the size and shape of teeth and fill in gaps between your teeth to make your smile appear straighter. Dr. Huang bonds these thin porcelain shells to the front of your teeth.
The process begins with the removal of a very thin layer of enamel from the teeth to make room for the veneer. The doctor will then take impressions of your mouth, which he will send to a reputable offsite dental lab, where technicians will create your custom-fit veneers. When your veneers arrive in our office, usually in the next two weeks, you will return to have them permanently bonded to your teeth.
Invisalign® and ClearCorrect® provide adults with an alternative to the metal bracket and wire braces they may remember from their youth. Patients wear a system of removable clear acrylic aligners, which gently move their teeth into the correct position. Patients wear an average of 20 to 30 sets of aligners for two weeks each, making the average treatment time 12 to 18 months.
Patients can remove their aligners to eat and clean their teeth, but should keep them in for 20 to 22 hours each day. The program requires no uncomfortable wires or bands, and patients only need to visit the office once every six weeks for a quick checkup and their next few aligners. For most patients, the best part of these programs is the clear aligners. When placed on the teeth, they appear practically invisible, so patients need not worry about orthodontics affecting their professional, adult appearance.
