Braces vs. Clear Aligners
Do you have a noticeably uneven smile? If you have crooked or crowded teeth, both the appearance of your smile and overall oral health are at risk. In order to correct the misalignment you will need to undergo orthodontic treatment. Our office offers an unique alternative to traditional braces with clear aligners. Which will work best for your smile? Braces or clear aligners?
The Dangers Misaligned Teeth
Why is the condition of misaligned teeth (an uneven smile) such a danger to your oral health? Because teeth that overlap or are crooked are difficult to thoroughly brush and floss. As a result, food that became trapped is not completely removed and is broken down by bacteria, thus causing plaque and tartar buildup. Soon, your smile is at increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Misalignment can also place inordinate stress in your jaw joints, leading to the potential onset of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). By correcting your alignment problems you can actually improve your overall oral health, as well as your smile’s appearance.
Braces, the most common method of correcting alignment troubles, involve attaching metal brackets to the front of the teeth and connecting an arch wire to them. The dentist or orthodontist adjusts them periodically to move the teeth into a better position. Many people are hesitant to wear braces because of the impact they have on the appearance of the smile. In addition, the treatment may take as long as two years in some cases.
Clear Aligners - Invisalign
For clear aligners, instead of brackets and wires, the dentist will take impressions and images of your teeth and send them to Invisalign lab. There, a series of clear aligners will be created from a BPA-free plastic. The patient wears the aligners every day and the total treatment takes about a year in many cases. Patients can remove them before eating; so they don't need to alter their diets. We typically recommend Invisalign for adult patients over the age of 16 who have minor alignment problems.
Which Should I Choose?
That depends on the factors behind your misalignment and the severity of your alignment issues. We will need to perform a thorough oral examination to decide whether clear aligners are the right choice for your smile.
