Stable Dentures, No Slipping

Smiling Couple at the Beach

Dr. Michael C. Huang works with many patients who wear dentures. Over the years, we have heard many stories about loose, wobbly dentures that slip out of place, occasionally even falling out. Many patients come to us seeking dentures as the best option to maintain dental health and a beautiful smile. They look to us for guidance in choosing the type of denture that will work best for them. For both previous denture wearers and those new to dentures, Dr. Huang recommends implant-supported dentures. These removable dentures snap onto tiny posts implanted in your jaw, providing unparalleled stability and support, without worry of slippage.

About Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny posts made of titanium that the dentist surgically implants in the jawbone to replace the roots of teeth missing due to decay, gum disease, or facial trauma. The implants are biocompatible, so as they heal, they fuse together with the bone, creating a sturdy anchor for restorations, and stimulating the jawbone to prevent shrinkage that may lead to hollow cheeks.

Qualifying for Implant-Supported Dentures

Qualifying for implant-supported dentures begins with a consultation with Dr. Huang. He will review your medical and dental history, and perform a comprehensive exam of your mouth, paying special attention to your gum tissue and the bone in your jaw. Patients must have an adequate amount of disease-free gum tissue available to aid in the implant healing process. The most important factor, however, is the density of your jawbone. The bone must be dense enough to hold the implant and provide support, or the patient may need to have a bone graft surgery before placing the implants. Once the dentist has deemed you an ideal candidate for dental implants, he will create a custom treatment plan that covers everything from the type of anesthesia you will need, to your recovery instructions. He will take digital x-rays and impressions of your mouth necessary for the creation of your dentures, and perform any necessary extractions.

Placement of Implant-Supported Dentures

To have implant-supported dentures placed, you will typically have two surgeries. On the day of your first surgery, our welcoming staff will greet you, make you comfortable, and begin administering your anesthesia. When you are sedated, Dr. Huang will begin surgically placing the titanium posts into your jawbone. For a full denture, the doctor will usually place four to six implants per arch. The implants will be hidden under the gums for healing, and the doctor will provide you with a temporary denture to wear for the next three to six months as they heal. Dr. Huang will use the x-rays and impressions taken to design your permanent denture, and send the design to a U.S.-based dental lab for fabrication.

When the implants have fully healed and fused with the bone, you will return to the office for your second surgery. At this time, the doctor will expose the implants from under the gums and attach connectors, called abutments, to the head of each. Dr. Huang will snap your new denture into place, checking for proper fit and occlusion, and make any necessary adjustments. Then he will send you out to share your new smile with your family and friends.

Types of Implant-Supported Dentures Available

The most common type of implant-supported denture involves an attachment on each implant that snaps into an attachment on the denture. Gaining in popularity, however, bar-retained dentures consist of a metal bar connected to the implants that follows the curve of your jawbone. Rather than snapping directly onto the implants, the denture fits over the bar and securely attaches to it with clips.

While not removable, one other option has seen a rise in popularity. Doctors have found that the All-on-4® denture offers a solution for patients who may not qualify for traditional implant-supported dentures due to low bone density. Four implants placed in the front of the jaw, where the bone is naturally denser, hold the denture in place. Rather than snapping the dentures onto the implants, the doctor permanently attaches them to the implants. Many patients have said that these dentures feel the most like natural teeth.
